The Stitchwitch Directive and Brigid

If you've been reading my Stitchwitch Directive posts and are interested in using the female stronghold of sewing as a means of empowerment, here's my thoughts on the connections between sewing and the ancient goddess Brigid. 


Goddess of Smithcraft:
The Stitchwitch's tools are a product of smithcraft - we wield the needle, the pin and the scissors. Thank Brigid for a finely crafted pair of scissors (Sheffield forged of course).

Goddess of Creativity:
We produce poetry in the form of stitches. What we make can deliver a profound message on who we are, what we want to be, our view of the world.

Goddess of Healing:
When we darn or patch we are healing an item of clothing so that it can continue its useful life. 

Bringer of Light:
If anyone needs a good source of strong light, it's us!

Brigid's festival falls at Imbolc - the time of year when the light strengthens and spring begins to show its green shoots. Celebrate this time (early February) by beginning a new project that somehow acknowledges this new growing year.

Throughout time, both men and women have participated in the art of sewing. But, as usual, when a man sews it's a professional job, something worth paying for. He is a Tailor. The sewing that women carry out has never had the same status. Making clothes for the family came under the heading of domestic duties. Problem Pages of the mid 20th Century

 Worried Words I have been collecting vintage women’s magazines for some time now. They are an excellent historical resource, very helpful in my research around the history of sewing. The best thing is, they can be picked up on ebay for less than the price of a modern magazine – and I often find that there are more articles worth reading in the old ones! As well as the nostalgia and reminders of domestic history, there is always something that makes me laugh. It might be the corny romance story, the endless adverts for laxatives (which says a lot about the British diet of yore) or the health article that doesn’t actually refer by name to the condition it is talking about. There are all kinds of quack remedies discussed and advertised for that regular female affliction that can never be mentioned! The language used to get around this taboo is fascinating. One Fine Day of One's Own

 Here's a fine combination for a quiet summer afternoon when there's no one else at home. -Tea in a Woods Ware cup and saucer - A box of good quality chocolates - A mid 20th century novel by a female writer - A British Transport Film My novel of choice for the summer would be 'One Fine Day' by Mollie Panter Downes. This is one of my all-time favourites, that I have now read numerous times. It suits a sunny afternoon with a heavy atmosphere, this kind of weather being the star turn of the novel. The story, such as it is, follows one woman's day in the summer of 1946. It's not too long and the lack of any excitement is relaxing - perfect escapism. It is a study of how the immediate post war period was turning lives in an unanticipated direction. The end of domestic service as British society had known it, the need for middle class women to run their households with very little help, the loss of the local gentry - this is all becoming realised at the point of this ...
